Seth Clark, co-owner of Salt City Builds takes a break next to another work of art in progress. As a portrait photographer, I specialize in creating portraits photographed in a specific place that helps tell the story of a person. In the photography world, we call these “environmental portraits." A good environmental portrait should illuminate both the subject's life and their surroundings. My approach to such a portrait involves finding the perfect spot in that place for a subject (person) to stand or sit and then to use both the ambient light, as well as some added strobe (flash) lighting to the scene for additional drama. Conversely, a studio portrait is a portrait which will focus less on surroundings and more on the individual by using a simple backdrop to help focus more on the individual’s physical image or character. All that said, I am still happy to shoot a studio portrait for a client, if they request one.
